You know that caring for natural hair takes a great deal of work: not just shampooing and brushing but conditioning, styling, cutting, and shaping, too. The same goes for your wig. While you don’t have to worry about cutting your wig, you still need to make sure that it’s cleaned and maintained regularly. This will help you keep your style on point day in and day out.

Luckily, Ann’s Wig Salon has the tips and tricks you need to keep your wig in tip-top shape. We also offer wig maintenance services if you want to be sure your wig looks perfect for a special occasion or day-to-day use.

Check out some of our tips below, and if you need extra help, be sure to call and ask about our wig maintenance services.

Step 1: Know your wig.

In general, there are two kinds of wigs: those made of synthetic hair, and those made from natural human hair. Be sure you know which one your wig or wigs are made of and buy care products that are designed specifically for that kind of wig.

Step 2: Wash once a week.

Human hair is naturally moisturized by oils from your scalp, but wigs don’t have this luxury. That’s why you should only wash your wig every 6-8 times you wear it, or roughly once a week.

To wash your wig, first remove any tangles using a wig brush or your fingers (for curly styles). Then soak the wig in a solution of cold water and your choice of wig shampoo. You can swirl the wig as it soaks, but don’t wring it or rub it. Once it’s done soaking, rinse it thoroughly in cold water.

Step 3: Let your wig dry.

Heat can be especially damaging to synthetic wigs, so never use a blow dryer on your wig. Instead, let it air-dry at room temperature. While it’s drying, set it on a wig stand and spritz it thoroughly with conditioner.

Step 4: Time for style!

Use a special wig comb, brush, or pick – or your own fingers – to style your wig as desired. You might also want to use wig mousse to achieve greater hold.

Remember, most wigs are very versatile and can be put into any number of styles. And if that seems like too much work, you can always buy multiple wigs in multiple styles!

Step 5: Make it last.

Keep your own hair clean while you’re wearing your wig, and be sure to have an extra wig or two on hand to wear while one is being cleaned. Store your wigs on a wig stand when you’re not wearing them. Finally, make sure you’re using the right wig products to keep your wig looking great in between washings.

Learn all about them!

There certainly isn’t a lack of celebrities who choose to wear a wig these days. Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Kim Kardashian have made wigs a popular fashion accessory, but this move can backfire if you don’t choose the right style wig.

Lace front wigs have actually been around for more than a decade. They were mostly used to naturally transform the look of an actor or actress into the character being played. When these actors and actresses realized how good they looked, they began to wear them away from the set as well!

Lace front wigs have an invisible hairline. This gives the impression that your wig is actually natural hair growing from your own head! No one will believe you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them. And even then, some of your more skeptical friends and family members may need a demonstration to be fully convinced. Lace front wigs also tend to be lighter and more comfortable to wear than an average wig. This gives you more versatility when it comes to styling! Lace front wigs are ready to be worn as well, because the lace does not require any cutting or customization. Finally, if you’re one for a lot of physical activity, lace front wigs will stay in place.
